THE FAKES
1st The Royal Dragoons
A fairly convincing fake badge. The lion's mane lacks fullness, the void in the crown is insufficient, the G of the work Dragoons has a flaw. The G from a genuine badge is clean and well defined. Original G letter to the right of the exploded view.

2nd Dragoons (The Scots Greys)
Lacks any quality. Strange bird head.

4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards
Weak details, long clover stem, lacks braze sweat holes, inconsistent sizing.

World War Two raised cavalry units
This section is devoted to the war raised cavalry units. Formed early in the war and disbanded before or shortly after it ended.
22nd Dragoons
A very common fake on the market. Easy to spot. Original badges feature voided spacing between the XXII numerals. Fakes are not voided.

23rd Hussars
Coming soon.
24th (XXIV) Lancers
There is more than one fake design on the market. This particular fake with the excess material at the foot of the lance (circled).

25th Dragoons
These badges can be tricky as the quality of the fakes is high. The materials and method are well executed. However, originals were made of 3-pieces, a white metal base, a gilding metal Crown, and gilding metal XXV numerals and banner. The fakes are 2-piece. The gilding metal part being of single punched sheet brass. You should see a white metal gap between Crown and X on originals.

26th Hussars
A very common reproduction cap badge. Easily identified from originals by the die flaw and excess material. Note the area where the clutched eagle meets the wing. At the point where the staff head eagle wing touches the wing of the main eagle wing, there is material beneath. On originals that material is not present.
On this particular example, the J.R. GAUNT B'HAM maker mark is from the 1970s period. It was used on a large batch of fakes produced in those years. Lugged versions of this badge are also found.

27th Lancers
The fakes of this cap badge often pass off as originals probably because originals are increasingly hard to come by, and that the reproduction cap badges are good quality.
Originals are of gilding metal with a white metal elephant head brazed on. Behind the head is a rectangular relief slot. Two short strengthening straps are brazed behind the lances between the head and the Crown. The fakes feature non-of this detail.

The many fake elephant heads of the 27th Lancers.
