Canadian Garrison Battalion Cap Badge of the Second World War
Share
During the Second World War, Canada raised a wide variety of units to support both home defence and overseas operations. Among the lesser-known formations was the Canadian Garrison Battalion, a specialised unit created to provide trained personnel for guard duties, security tasks, and the protection of key military installations.
Unlike front-line infantry battalions intended for active combat operations, Garrison Battalions were designed to release fully fit infantrymen for operational service by assigning men of lower medical categories, older age groups, or those otherwise suited to static duties. Their role was nevertheless essential, safeguarding military facilities, prisoner-of-war camps, depots, and other strategic locations during a period of global conflict.
Today, the insignia of the Canadian Garrison Battalion ranks among the most elusive of all Canadian Second World War badges. Produced in comparatively small numbers and worn by a unit that existed outside the better-known combat formations, surviving examples are seldom encountered. The distinctive design, featuring a castle garrison motif, has made the badge highly sought after by collectors of Canadian military insignia.
In this article we examine the history of the Canadian Garrison Battalion and take a closer look at the officer and other ranks cap badges issued to the unit, including construction details, known variations, and collecting considerations.
