An original commemorative medal for the Battle of Solferino, fought on 22 June 1859 during the Second Italian War of Independence.
24 mm stamped bronze obverse featuring the busts of Napoleon III & Victor Emmanuel II. Reverse "GUERRE D’INDEPENDANCE D’ITALIE" around the edge, centrally "BATAILLE DE SOLFERINO GAGNEE LE 22 JUIN 1859" Age tones, softening of features, edge and surface contact marks, a 1 mm shallow hole to the reverse, later replacement ribbon.
Campaign: Part of the Second Italian War of Independence, a conflict in which France and the Kingdom of Sardinia (Piedmont) allied to drive out the Austrian Empire from Northern Italy.
