Antique 19th Century Swiss Infantry Shako - 37th Regiment
Antique 19th Century Swiss Infantry Shako - 37th Regiment
A rare and well-preserved example of a Swiss infantry shako, likely issued to an enlisted man of the 37e Régiment d’Infanterie de Ligne. This pattern was worn during the 19th century.
Constructed of pressed felt and leather with a stiff leather visor, the shako retains its original shape and internal structure. The exterior features a black felt overlay, likely applied historically for preservation, over the original felt shell—which remains intact underneath, though somewhat dry and worn in areas. The overlay slightly obscures the ventilation grommets on either side, which are original to the helmet.
The front bears a white metal “37” regimental number flanked by two five-pointed stars, along with a striking black and red cockade mounted under a metal pompon holder. A brown and red wool pompon tops the shako, possibly denoting company affiliation. The chinstrap buckles are steel, appropriate for enlisted ranks. Interior leather shows age and cracking; liner without draw string.
Inside the front visor is a crisp impressed depot mark reading "StG" and a serial or stock number (“2405”).
This is a highly collectible shako with original components and regimental identifiers. The felt covering could be carefully reversed or preserved as-is depending on display preference.
