An original French Saint Helena Medal. Instituted by Napoleon III in 1857 as the very first French campaign medal. Retrospectively issued to surviving servicemen of the Grande Armee`.
31.5 mm width, bronze construction. Bust of Napoleon Bonaparte facing East. Inscription "NAPOLEON I EMPEREUR". Imperial Crown. Reverse annotated "A SES COMPAGNONS DE GLOIRE SA DERNIÈRE PENSÉE STE HÉLÈNE 5 MAI 1821" ("To His Comrades in Glory His Last Thought St Helena 5 May 1821").
