An original and scarce medal to commemorate Napoleon III’s support for Italian unification, specifically marking the date 8 May 1859, shortly after France and Sardinia declared war on Austria.
Obverse: Bust of Napoleon III facing left. Inscription: "NAPOLEONE III IMPERATORE DEI FRANCESI" (Napoleon III, Emperor of the French).
Reverse: Inscription: “L’ITALIA DEVE ESSERE LIBERA SINO ALL’ADRIATICO – 8 MAGGIO 1859” ("Italy must be free up to the Adriatic – 8 May 1859").
This quote became a powerful nationalist slogan during the Second War of Independence.
26 mm die stamped bronze with period tricolor ribbon. Rim contact marks and some light pitting, overall good condition.
