An original commemorative medal issued in 1859 to honour King Vittorio Emanuele II, the monarch who played a central role in the unification of Italy. This type of medal was widely issued during and shortly after the Second Italian War of Independence, particularly after the Battle of Solferino and the Franco-Sardinian victories.
