Original WW1 British Red Cross fundraising souvenir featuring a genuine piece of steel wire from the wreckage of the German Zeppelin brought down at Cuffley, Hertfordshire, on 3 September 1916.
Mounted on its original printed Red Cross card backing with the text: “This is a piece of genuine Zeppelin wire, from the first Zeppelin brought down at Cuffley in Essex.” The wire is still attached via its brass pin. The card has significant edge wear and loss to the bottom of the card but retains all key text and the original wire + safety pin, the wire oxidised.
The L31 (commanded by Kapitänleutnant Heinrich Mathy), shot down at Cuffley, Hertfordshire (not Essex — though it was often mistakenly labeled so) on 3 September 1916.
