This is a rare example of a WWII British civilian defence helmet constructed from Bakelite, a phenolic resin material used during the early war years when metal was scarce. These lightweight helmets were typically issued to ARP wardens, Home Guard volunteers, and other non-combatant roles exposed to air raids or industrial hazards.
Features:
Domed wide-brim design, cast in black Bakelite with textured surface
Original interior liner with cork pads and canvas suspension
Fully intact canvas chinstrap with spring fittings
War-era wear and soiling consistent with service use
Unmarked shell (as typical for many Bakelite issues), but distinctive form and fittings
There is a crack to the rear rim as photographed.
These helmets were issued in far smaller numbers than Zuckermans and are sought after for their uniquely civilian wartime character and uncommon material.
