Original WW2 German War Merit Cross 1st Class (Kriegsverdienstkreuz 1. Klasse) breast badge in silvered tombac, featuring the Maltese-style cross with raised edges and a pebbled center.
This is the version without swords, awarded for exceptional service behind the lines or in civilian roles contributing to the war effort. Reverse has a functioning pin-back fitting and retains original finish with some age-appropriate toning. The pin seems to be maker marked but the finish wear makes it difficult to ascertain - it's probably “50” by Karl Gschiermeister of Wien (Vienna).
